The Knotweed Services (UK) Ltd team recently completed an unusual complex Japanese knotweed remediation project on a new residential development site that had the added complication of a listed barn situated on site.
Japanese knotweed had taken growth within the barn foundations, putting the actual barn’s structural integrity at risk. Given the barn’s current status, preserving its features while tackling the knotweed was our top priority.
To begin the works, the frontage of the barn was carefully removed ensuring no damage to its façade and cleaning the removed bricks for the reinstatement at a later date. At the same time, an internal subframe was constructed and installed to stabilise the building and support the roof beams during the removal process.
The Japanese knotweed, with its aggressive rhizome system, had infiltrated the masonry and floor voids, so careful excavation was essential to eliminate the infestation.
Now that the Japanese knotweed has been removed, a comprehensive monitoring plan has been put in place to keep an eye on the site for several years going forward.
This project is a great example of how we can combine environmental expertise with structural care to protect both the integrity of our built heritage and the surrounding environment.
