The government throws the towel in against Japanese Knotweed

Japanese knotweed is now a mind-boggling pest that the United Kingdom’s government has thrown out and given up on the notion of a nationwide Japanese knotweed removal plan. Japanese knotweed has become so widespread that it’s not possible to locate a six-mile square area of the UK mainland that is free from at least traces of Japanese knotweed.

George Eustice, a minister for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), is quoted as saying:

“There are no plans to attempt a national eradication because the cost would be prohibitively expensive and likely to be unsuccessful given the widespread distribution of the species.”

Mr Eustice also said that that the cost of a nationwide eradication programme could cost a mind-boggling:

£1.5 billion.

DEFRA have made attempts and efforts to naturally cull Japanese knotweed previously by releasing Japanese knotweed eating insects called psyllids. Regrettably such insects, that are used throughout Japan, couldn’t acclimate to the weather in the UK and died out, long before they were able to have an impact on culling the invasive weed.

Mr Eustice said:

“To date research has not shown significant or sustainable impacts, because only small populations of the psyllid have survived in the wild.”

Although the government have decided that fighting Japanese knotweed is too expensive for them to purse, Japanese knotweed legislation is as strict as it’s ever been – with fines and jail time a possibility for those people and home owners not abiding by these laws.
