RESIDENTIAL TREATMENTS.
As infestations of this invasive species vary, so does the application method, treatment and control. One or more treatment techniques may be needed for this invasive plant.
Our Japanese Knotweed specialists are trained to consider all factors to obtain maximum results. Ongoing assessments of site-specific infestations and affecting factors and variables will determine treatment options.
The application process and control strategies will be adapted to specific places to maximise performance while minimising waste and environmental impact.
As Property Care Association (PCA) approved Japanese Knotweed specialists, we use the latest research to determine the best time to treat. You can trust our eco control solutions.
The latest research from Swansea University, released April 2018 by Dr. Dan Jones & Professor Dan Eastwood found that:
Applying the wrong herbicides at the wrong time of the year, leads to greater herbicide use and environmental impacts. The 4-Stage Model that we have developed links herbicide selection and application with the seasonal surface-rhizome flows in the Knotweed plant. This seasonal targeting of Knotweed delivers better results and uses lower doses of herbicide across the whole treatment life-cycle. For the public and land managers, this means more affordable treatment that is also more environmentally friendly than traditional, blanket herbicide application.
(Dr. Dan Jones – Swansea University).
Following the release of this research, Knotweed Services (UK) Ltd now operate using the 4-stage model which identifies the optimal time for treatment.

FOLIAR SPRAYING
The most commonly used treatment. Spraying strong chemicals with a backpack. We make certain that no other plants are harmed. Japanese knotweed foliar spraying is most effective in the spring.
FOLIAR LEAF WIPING
We use a device to ‘physically wipe’ our chemicals onto the Japanese knotweed leaves in this Japanese knotweed treatment. Because this use is so exact, we can frequently use a higher concentration of chemical.
STEM INJECTION
We inject a precise dose of herbicide directly into the invasive weed. This is the most cunning way of elimination because it is injected straight into the Japanese Knotweed. It is not affected by the weather.
BIOMASS REDUCTION
Biomass is a type of excavation and removal, but instead of extracting all of the Japanese Knotweed-affected soil, we simply remove the afflicted soil. It is an outstanding Japanese Knotweed control strategy that enables for soil reuse. Reducing landfill usage.
CROWN REMOVAL
Crown and stems can regenerate, and even small bits of chopped crown or stem can become a new invasive weed; eliminating these from the equation is a fantastic method. Destroys the root system of the Fallopia Japonica.
COMMERCIAL REMOVAL.
If you want to develop or build on Japanese Knotweed-infested land, a 5-year (herbicide) management plan is not an option. This is frequently due to time limits imposed by planners, construction workers, resource availability, and finance schedules.
The Environment Agency also recommends that in cases of development, the entire rhizome of the Japanese Knotweed be removed from the soil for complete eradication; this is especially important when the ground is likely to be disturbed in the construction, building of & extension of homes/industrial & commercial units, & landscaping of grounds.
Knotweed Services (UK) Ltd provides expert services and options that are tailored to each client’s demands and needs. Our pleasant and helpful staff are available to speak with and provide information and support.
We will walk you through the process from the start, identifying the present use of the land, future
development plans, time-scales, schedules and find out if planning applications have been made or approved (if planning has been approved, we’ll ask you for copies to assist in the treatment plan) and give advice on the most cost-effective ways to deal with the problem, based on your project needs.
Pictures, measurements, and details about the site or project will be documented. For example, access points for plant equipment, routes for disposal vehicles, potential bund areas, and a Risk Assessment of the site and any possible dangers will be recorded. When choosing the most cost-effective and appropriate management plan for the site or project, the surveyor will also take into account things like nearby waterways, neighbouring properties, and plans for the site.
The results of the site survey, a proposed schedule of work, and a quote are then put into a report and given to the client for consideration.
Knotweed Services (UK) Ltd will provide both the machinery and skilled staff for all of our projects. Our technicians and operatives are all trained and directly employed in-house. We will control and oversee all works directly and ensure that all legislation is strictly adhered to and that no cross contamination occurs. Alternatively, if you provide your own plant we can oversee the works for you.
NO TWO JOBS ARE EVER THE SAME.
In reality most eradication programs are a combination of treatments.
— COMMERCIAL TREATMENT OPTIONS
SOIL SCREENING
Methodology used on hundreds of UK sites.
Screening separates Japanese knotweed rhizome from soil. Japanese knotweed is either transported to an approved landfill at a cheaper disposal rate or burnt on site under an Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales D6 exemption.
The cleaned soils can be utilised in soft landscaping areas.
This can reduce landfill & backfill expenses and site carbon footprint due to fewer vehicle trips to landfill.
BIOSECURITY SUPERVISION
Knotweed Services may supply a biosecurity operative to supervise Japanese knotweed excavations.
We can create a biosecurity boot wash and machine-washing station at the site’s entrance. We’ll offer toolbox talks for the site’s chief contractor, which will be signed by all contractors.
We can install temporary geotextile barriers in biosecurity-sensitive regions.
After the work is done, we’ll send a biosecurity report.
This procedure can be utilised with on-site treatments.
EXCAVATION AND DISPOSAL
This treatment procedure is suitable when time is limited and Japanese Knotweed and polluted soil must be removed to a licenced landfill.
By eradicating all evidence of the infestation swiftly, your construction work can begin nearly immediately. No Japanese Knotweed removal / treatment approach is faster or better at destroying its rhizome system.
Any off-site waste is transferred by a licenced waste carrier to an authorised landfill – including the invasive plant species root system!
CELL BURIAL
Moving Knotweed-contaminated soil from one site location to another and burying it in a trench enclosed with a root barrier membrane is cell burial.
Japanese Knotweed burial requirements:
- The Environment Agency proposes a 2-meter-deep burial chamber.
- The grave should be 5 metres deep.
- All root barrier seams are welded together to construct a cell Japanese Knotweed can’t escape. Backfill with clean soil.
- To minimise inadvertent disturbance of the burial site, all site designs should include its position.
STOCKPILE & TREAT
Bunding moves polluted Japanese Knotweed soil to a separate site area. A bund is a polluted soil region that is typically 0.5m deep.
The bund can be elevated or buried to be flush with the surrounding region.
Bunds transport Japanese Knotweed to unused land. This allows therapy where it wasn’t possible before.
HERBICIDE APPLICATION
Knotweed Services may provide bespoke treatment strategies based on Japanese knotweed sites.
These solutions can function with other treatments where pedestrian access is limited, such as embankments or existing routes.
This includes up to 3 visits per year to apply herbicide by foliar spray or stem injection over 3 years, followed by 2 years of monitoring.
We’d choose herbicides based on the surrounding foliage or surroundings.
After each visit, a detailed treatment record with images showing progress and a yearly report are provided. This treatment works best during the growing season.
