- Mortgage lenders often refuse to lend against a building in which Japanese Knotweed is found.
- Originally thought be an ornamental plant, Japanese Knotweed now obstructs both visibility and access to paths, highways and other infrastructure. The plant produces a massive annoyance for commercial properties in particular.

— TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN ABERDEENSHIRE

SOIL SCREENING
Hundreds of sites in Aberdeenshire and Scotland adopt this strategy for dealing with this invasive species.
Japanese knotweed rhizome is separated from soil by screening. It’s then either transported to an approved landfill for disposal at a lower cost or burned on-site under an Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales D6 exemption.
Due to fewer vehicle trips to the dump, this can save landfill and backfill expenses as well as a site’s carbon footprint.

BIOSECURITY SUPERVISION
Knotweed Services can provide a biosecurity operative to supervise excavations.
At the site’s entrance, we can install a boot and machine wash. All contractors will sign toolbox discussions for the site’s principal contractor.
Biosecurity-sensitive areas can have geotextile barriers installed.
We’ll send a biosecurity report when finished. This can be used alongside other treatments.

EXCAVATION AND DISPOSAL
This treatment procedure is suitable when time is limited and Japanese Knotweed and polluted soil must be removed to a licenced landfill.
By eradicating all evidence of the infestation swiftly, your business project can begin nearly immediately. No Japanese Knotweed removal/treatment method is faster. Japanese Knotweed root systems are removed completely.
Any off-site waste is transferred by a licensed waste carrier to an authorised landfill.

CELL BURIAL
Cell burial involves transporting Knotweed-contaminated soil from one site location to another and burying it in a hole lined with a root barrier membrane.
Japanese Knotweed burial requirements:
- The Environment Agency proposes a 2-meter-deep burial chamber.
- Overall, the burial pit should be 5 metres deep. All root barrier seams are welded together to construct a cell that Japanese Knotweed can’t escape. Clean soil is subsequently utilised to backfill the cell.
- To minimise unintentional damage of the burial site, all site plans should show its position.

STOCKPILE & TREAT
Bunding moves polluted Japanese Knotweed soil to a separate site area. A bund is a shallow region of polluted soil, typically 0.5m deep.
The bund can be elevated or buried to be flush with the surrounding region.
The bund moves Japanese Knotweed to unused land. This “buys time” so that the Japanese Knotweed can be treated in a way that wouldn’t be possible where it was before. Our Japanese Knotweed Specialists will be on-hand at all times.

HERBICIDE APPLICATION
Knotweed Services may provide tailored treatment programmes based on the location of Japanese knotweed.
These plans can be used with other treatments that limit access to pedestrians, such as embankments or existing routes.
This will generally consist of up to 3 visits per year to apply herbicide by foliar spray or stem injection during the growing season for a period of 3 years, with a monitoring period of 2 years thereafter.
We would choose pesticides based on surrounding foliage, bio diversity or environmental conditions.
After each visit, a detailed treatment record with images showing progress and a yearly report are provided.
