As one of the leading Japanese knotweed providers in Edinburgh and Scotland, Knotweed Services has dedicated inspectors living and working in the city of Edinburgh. And because we’re local, we can ensure fast, economical removal of this troublesome weed.
Knotweed Services is a member of the PCA, a trade body for treating and controlling invasive weeds. We follow the latest treatment and removal techniques for Japanese knotweed removal.
We have used our expertise in knotweed eradication to complete a number of challenging projects in and around Edinburgh and England. For knotweed removal to be successful, experienced identification, surveying, treatment, and control must take place. We can help.
Reasons to use Knotweed Services
Japanese knotweed is one of the most damaging plants in the UK. Where it exists, the value of your property can drop by thousands – or even tens of thousands – of pounds. Wherever you are in Scotland, we offer a free survey* to discover if you have knotweed on your property and how best to manage it.
If you’re a land or property owner and Japanese Knotweed is present, the presence of the plant may delay construction projects.
How bad is Japanese Knotweed?
- Knotweed can grow through tarmac and concrete, posing a threat to the structure of your property.
- Mortgage lenders often refuse to lend against a building with an infestation present.
- Knotweed causes both physical and economic damage to property.
Knotweed Services offers its customers in Edinburgh a guarantee against re-infection and the spread of knotweed.

— TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN EDINBURGH

SOIL SCREENING
This method is used by hundreds of venues in Edinburgh and Scotland.
Screening removes the rhizome of Japanese knotweed from the soil. Japanese knotweed is either transported to an approved landfill for disposal at a lower cost or burned on-site under an Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales D6 exemption.
The treated soils are frequently used in soft landscaping.
Due to fewer vehicle trips to the dump, this can save landfill and backfill expenses as well as a site’s carbon footprint.

BIOSECURITY SUPERVISION
Knotweed Services can provide a biosecurity officer to oversee the removal of Japanese knotweed.
We can set up a boot-washing and machine-washing station for biosecurity at the entrance to the site. We’ll have toolbox talks for the site’s chief contractor, and all contractors will sign them.
In areas where biosecurity is important, we can put up temporary geotextile barriers.
When the work is done, we’ll send a report on biosecurity. This method can be used on site with other treatments.

EXCAVATION AND DISPOSAL
This treatment method is appropriate when time is of the essence and Japanese Knotweed and toxic soil must be transferred to a licenced landfill.
By quickly removing all evidence of the infestation, your company initiative may begin almost immediately. There is no faster Japanese knotweed removal/treatment procedure. The root systems of Japanese knotweed are entirely destroyed.
A licenced waste carrier transports any off-site rubbish to an authorised landfill.

CELL BURIAL
Cell burial involves transporting Knotweed-contaminated soil from one site location to another and burying it in a hole lined with a root barrier membrane.
Japanese Knotweed burial requirements:
- The Environment Agency proposes a 2-meter-deep burial chamber.
- Overall, the burial pit should be 5 metres deep. All root barrier seams are welded together to construct a cell that Japanese Knotweed can’t escape. Clean soil is subsequently utilised to backfill the cell.
- To minimise unintentional damage of the burial site, all site plans should show its position.

STOCKPILE & TREAT
Bunding transports polluting Japanese Knotweed soil to a different site area. A bund is a 0.5m deep shallow zone of polluted soil.
To be flush with the surrounding area, the bund might be lifted or buried.
The bund relocates Japanese knotweed to undeveloped areas. This “buys time” so that the Japanese Knotweed can be handled in a way that was not before conceivable. Our Japanese Knotweed Experts will be available at all times.

HERBICIDE APPLICATION
Knotweed Services can customise treatment based on the location of Japanese knotweed.
These plans can be utilised in conjunction with other treatments that restrict pedestrian access, such as embankments or existing paths.
Up to 3 visits per year to apply herbicide by foliar spray or stem injection throughout the growing season for 3 years, followed by 2 years of monitoring.
After each visit, a treatment record with progress photographs and a yearly report are provided.
